i deprecated a word "career" from my vocabulary
word precision as means of reality construction
As an early adult, I found myself in the world where the default tends to be a reduction of a complex human being into one identity statement. this statement tends to come from career.
“Hi, I am a Senior Product Manager,”
“And I am a Teacher,”
“And I am just a Director.”
I notice that these statements tend to constrain the multitudes of my existence while profiting the folks ceo-ing the hamster wheel.
Words we use shape the reality we see. And in my world, the word “career” feels hella dirty:
Career is a ladder.
Career is a meter measuring who is better you or your buddy.
Career is a proxy of human’s success.
Career is growing money and money is never enough.
You are never enough.
I don’t want these vibes in my inner world. And so I choose to let go of using career as self-definition. I still can use it for external world happenings, as I need to be a player of society.
But in my mind, I choose to see my doings as crafts.
My craft is product thinking.
My craft is experiential design.
My craft is meaningful relationships.
My craft is clowning around.
My craft is yoga teaching,
My craft is writing.
My craft is meditation.
My craft is coaching.
My craft is design.
My craft is software.
My craft is musical-ing.
My craft is handstands.
Many crafts I have got. Some are long-term, others live in the now. Some are monetize-able, some are expensive. Some are multi-player games, others are done in solitude. Some are seeds just planted, others are strong oaks bearing its acorns.
What is your craft, my dear internet friend?
Huggingly,
Svitlana
P.S.:
Help me see what I don’t see by challenging me.
My ideas are not me and who I am is always changing.
I enjoyed reading this, and agree with your reasoning for deprecating the word “career”. Although I do like the concept of having a “purpose” or an “objective” — the idea that you can unify all your actions or “crafts” as steps toward something that you believe in, hopefully something you think is wrong with your world today, and you want to fix.
